Homework Activities MULTIPLICATION BLITZES Our FINAL "Mixed Facts Blitz" for the school year is this Friday, March 25 ranging from the 0X to the 9X facts. Each Friday morning I will post the Math Blitz on our GC for anyone who may be absent & wishes to complete it. However, this is NOT a requirement. MISSED WORK/ILLNESS: Please note that any reading logs or math blitz practice are NOT expected to be completed when students are sick, or, have a medical/family related situation. If your child is absent from school for a period of time and you wish to have some samples of the work sent home, please contact me a few days in advance as I will need time to organize and prepare the work. Please note that not all work is capable of being completed at-home due to the necessity of several factors. For example, the need for school hands-on materials; small group setting arrangements; whole group activities; direct teacher instruction required; assessment procedures/policies; modelling/samples of tasks; etc. Our staff here at Holy Trinity; the provinces school district; and our Department of Education fosters a philosophy of a "hands on/exploratory" approach to learning that requires significant teacher modelling and students learning from one another in a variety of small/whole group settings. In addition, much of students individual work is for "assessment/evaluation" purposes, and therefore, cannot be sent home to be completed as it will influence the result of the assessment and not depict a true picture of the students understanding of the specific outcome being instructed. VACATIONS: Students are NOT expected to complete academic work on any vacations taken throughout the school year. There are 2 suggested (NOT required) activities for when families are taking vacations during the school year:1. Novel reading (students choice of text)2. Project of their trip (for eg, creating a poster of the trip, journal entries, digital slide show, informal oral presentation of pictures, etc). Due the dynamic nature of the 21st century learning environment for primary/elementary aged children, it is very challenging to outline the specific activities/classroom work that we will be completing during a specific block of time. There are continuous daily changes of the academic activities and targeted curriculum outcomes that are often dictated by the students prior knowledge and level of understanding. In conjunction with the examples listed above in the "Missed Work/Illness" section (for eg; school hands-on materials, small group setting arrangements, partner activities, teacher instruction required, modelling/samples of task, etc) are also primary reasons why work cannot be sent with students who are on vacations during the school year. In addition, the assessment of an individual students capabilities are compromised when not completed on independent basis.
